NASA recently announced two new Venus-bound missions, dubbed DAVINCI+ and VERITAS, and the European Space Agency revealed it will launch the EnVision mission to the planet. The three spacecraft will launch late this decade and in the early 2030s.
DAVINCI+ (short for Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble Gases, Chemistry and Imaging) will plunge through the thick Venus atmosphere to learn more about it changes over time. Meanwhile, VERITAS (Venus Emissivity, Radio Science, InSAR, Topography and Spectroscopy) mission will use radar to map Venus’ surface in detail from orbit.

A planet’s day is the time it takes to make one full rotation on its axis. Interestingly, Venus rotates backwards unlike most other planets. It also rotates much more slowly than Earth does, so a day there is the equivalent of 243 Earth days or 5,832 hours!
Since Venus and Earth are almost the same size and have about the same mass, their surface gravities are very similar. Venus is about 91% of that of the Earth, so if you weigh 100 pounds on Earth, you would weigh 91 pounds on Venus.
The thick atmosphere of Venus produces it’s high surface temperature and covers the surface in continuous red twilight. It is mostly carbon dioxide gas (about 96%), with some nitrogen (about 3%) and a very small amount of water vapor (0.003%).
Sunlight does not penetrate directly through it’s heavy clouds, but the surface is fairly well lit by diffuse light and looks similar to the light on Earth under a heavy overcast. The weather at the bottom of this deep atmosphere is permanently hot and dry, with calm winds. Because of the heavy blanket of clouds and atmosphere, the weather on one spot on the surface of Venus is almost the same as any other.
As sunlight passes through the atmosphere, it heats up the surface of Venus. Most of this heat cannot escape back into space because it is blocked by Venus’ thick atmosphere. The heat becomes trapped and builds up to extremely high temperatures of 864 ℉, making Venus the solar system’s hottest planet!
